Not too long ago, Jamie sprayed champagne all over the walls. This year, it's feces.
I figured the first post of the new year should include a popped bottle of champagne. It seemed/seems timely, so why not?
Alright, that’s all I’m going to say about champagne.
Is Jamie Moyer dying? Seriously – his blood is deteriorating, he’s old as shit, and I feel like he shadily gets rushed to the ER bi-weekly. Is it just me, or is the guy that’s projected to be our fifth-starter going to be warming up before games in a tomb?
In other news… The Phillies signed Danys Baez to a two-year deal and hope he can pick up the slack. The bullpen sucked last year and that is no secret. Brad Lidge is the poster child for nervous ninnies around the globe and clips of Pujols rocking his shit into night have resurfaced. Life has certainly sucked in that department for mole boy and Phils fans alike.
What is our bullpen going to look like? I can’t just sit around and accept that Ruben is going to scrape up some sourpuss that is pissed off in March over the fact that he couldn’t command a reasonable offer to match his skill set. I hate bargain hunting. Sure – it is troubling to some that a team that’s been to the World Series two years in a row can’t just go out and sign someone GOOD if they want to, but I’ve already spoken about why we can’t do that.
Chad Durbin? J.C. Romero (don’t give a fuck if he took drugs; can he still play)? Who else? Kendrick? Bastardo?
I will point out that projecting bullpen stats for most teams is a fools’ game. With that said, I will be quiet before going any further.

The bullpen is a serious issue, I believe. To win a championship, you need to be able to count on a reliever to close the door. That is evident by the 2008 and 2009 Phillies teams? The difference? Well, 2009 was better in every possible statistical category except those that relate to the bullpen. The result? No repeat championship. You don’t need a $15M, hot head face fuck like Papelbon, or an overrated prick dick like K-Rod, you need someone reliable. (BTW, “Prick Dick” is trademarked)
You’ve to two basic approaches:
1. Sign a shitload of low risk, high reward type relievers. This saves money, but you may not find what your looking. Someone like Kiko Calero.
2. “The Yankee Philosophy”. Phillies make a lot of money, so they should get to spend some. Throw money at Jose Valverde.
Bottom line, do something.

That is a typo, not a question. It’s fact.

About the site: I would do that, except I have nothing to do with making this site. While I write for it, I don’t even know who owns it hahah
Here’s the thing, though: how many ‘bullpen stars’ are there? After all, bullpen guys are really just guys who couldn’t make it as a starter (I don’t care what anyone says – he couldn’t stay healthy/his off-pitches weren’t good enough to fool batters for 6-9 innings.) If you pay a bullpen guy (who usually is a really unsure thing) starter money, I think that’s ridiculous (most of the time.)
Sure, you have Mariano Rivera, and guys like that who are givens to absolutely kick ass every year they play. They are worth every penny. Valverde is OK… for a bullpen guy I suppose he’s up there. I just can’t get comfortable with the idea that these guys can make a lot of money.
But yeah, don’t have to tell me twice about the bullpen. It sucked last year. I hate Chad Durbin and I want him to get lost. Kendrick can have a 2.00 ERA out of the bullpen this year and I’ll still shit myself if I see him in a crucial situation during the playoffs. I felt the most comfortable when Park and Eyre would come into the game… and they’re both gone. Madson, Lidge, Baez (need to see him on our team, I’m not confident yet), Romero, blah blah blah…. they all scare me. I am not confident in anyone we have right now.
