Don’t get too excited, it’s still early. Or is it?
Posted by Bay Slugga in General Thoughts, Phillies Rants on July 20th, 2009
The closest competition for the Phillies is currently the Braves, who sit six and a half games out of first place in the NL East. It’s hard not to enjoy the Phillies current hot streak, but assholes will like to say things like, “Oh well, it’s only July 20th, wait till Reyes and Delgado come back!”
While normally I’d lean more towards the “don’t get excited yet” crowd, there are two things that are making me think the Phillies could have this one in the bag.
First of all, the Phillies’ main competition will be a healthy Mets squad in August and September. However, I do not think the players who are currently on the Mets’ DL (Reyes, Delgado, Beltran, etc.) will be able to step in and perform at the level they once could. It’s not as if all these players took a two-month hiatus from baseball to take basket weaving classes, they will becoming off serious injuries. Baseball Prospectus seems to agree with me, as they give the Mets a 3% chance of making the playoffs.
My second point is what makes me feel very confident that the Phillies will once again be playing baseball in October. If the Phillies were to fold from here on out and play .500 baseball, they would finish the year with an 88-74 record. It would take a run of 42-28, a .667 winning percentage, for the Braves to even tie the Phillies. Since the Braves have shown that they have been basically a .500 team all year, I think a 42-28 streak is highly unlikely.
Since it would seem the Phillies are on the verge of running away with the NL East, is it still a good decision to sell the farm for Halladay? I’m glad I’m not Amaro on this one, as this is a tough decision.
Editor’s Note from WTT: No, it’s not. Go fucking get him.
Breaking News: Werth to replace Beltran on All Star team
Posted by Bay Slugga in Breaking News, Enemies on July 10th, 2009
With BelTRON being on the DL with a strained vagina and mole that is apparently eating his head, Cholly decided to pencil in Werth as his replacement. Todd Zolecki reports that this is the first time since 1995 that an entire starting outfield has made the All Star game.
It feels good to be the champs don’t it Charlie? Any chance of getting Matt Stairs on the roster? I’ll call a hit in on Ryan Braun.

Chirs Coste has been designated for assignment today to make room for Ibanez. The Astros promptly claimed Coste, so his tenure here is Philadelphia is over. All hail Bako? Jesus.
You either have it, or you don’t

It would be very easy for me to proclaim that the Phillies are better than the Mets, but in an attempt to act like a real writer, allow me to analyze the situation (anal, ha). The rivalry between the Phillies and the Mets has really heated up over the last three seasons, with words being exchanged back and forth, close games with late inning heroics, September collapses, and October ascensions to greatness. I will, however, proclaim that the Phillies have been better than the Mets since the original, “we are the team to beat”. Now the question I’ll look to put in better perspective is the following – Why have the Phillies been on the better end of this rivalry?
NL East Weekly Review 6/1 – 6/7

Mets: The New York Mets (30-25) have problems. And I’m not just being a hater here, but they have big problems. Injuries, swine flu, and fragile psyches are running wild through the clubhouse. At this point, it isn’t just one move Omar Minaya needs to make to get this team right. The Mets could use a pitcher, first basemen, and an outfielder. Anyhow, they dropped three games in Pittsburgh last week, with their only saving grace being a rain out. Carlos Beltran had the nerve to call out the Pirates after they got butt-raped (BUTT PIRATES HA!), but was then promptly owned by Adam LaRoche. Thank you LaRoche, you just confirmed what everyone in Philadelphia (and probably New York) already knew. Oh yea, the Mets took two of three from the Nationals to finish the week at 2-4.
Braves: The Atlanta Braves (27-28) traded for the Pirates centerfielder Nate Mclouth this week, possibly sensing the top of the NL East is in striking distance with the Mets being banged up. A rain shortened series was split with Cubs, and then the Braves lost two out of three to the Brewers pushing their record to 2-3 for the week. The one win against the Brewers was the major league debut of Tommy Hanson, who is regarded as the Braves best prospect. Hanson, who is 18 days younger than me, got tagged for seven runs over six innings. The Braves went on to win behind a 5 RBI effort from Larry Jones.
Marlins: The Florida Marlins (27-31) continue their inconsistent play as they took three of four from the Brewers, and then dropped two of three to the Giants. The Marlins now find themselves 7.5 games back in the NL East looking up at the Phillies, Mets, and Braves.
Nationals: John Lannan > Mets
