Jamie Moyer… or lack there of.

Not too long ago, Jamie sprayed champagne all over the walls. This year, its feces.

Not too long ago, Jamie sprayed champagne all over the walls. This year, it's feces.

I figured the first post of the new year should include a popped bottle of champagne. It seemed/seems timely, so why not?

Alright, that’s all I’m going to say about champagne.

Is Jamie Moyer dying? Seriously – his blood is deteriorating, he’s old as shit, and I feel like he shadily gets rushed to the ER bi-weekly. Is it just me, or is the guy that’s projected to be our fifth-starter going to be warming up before games in a tomb?

In other news… The Phillies signed Danys Baez to a two-year deal and hope he can pick up the slack. The bullpen sucked last year and that is no secret. Brad Lidge is the poster child for nervous ninnies around the globe and clips of Pujols rocking his shit into night have resurfaced. Life has certainly sucked in that department for mole boy and Phils fans alike.

What is our bullpen going to look like? I can’t just sit around and accept that Ruben is going to scrape up some sourpuss that is pissed off in March over the fact that he couldn’t command a reasonable offer to match his skill set. I hate bargain hunting. Sure – it is troubling to some that a team that’s been to the World Series two years in a row can’t just go out and sign someone GOOD if they want to, but I’ve already spoken about why we can’t do that.

Chad Durbin? J.C. Romero (don’t give a fuck if he took drugs; can he still play)? Who else? Kendrick? Bastardo?

I will point out that projecting bullpen stats for most teams is a fools’ game. With that said, I will be quiet before going any further.

Oh Shit

Thank God for the Phillies cozy lead in the NL East, because they really need it. Not only has the team been playing terrible since the Pittsburgh series, but injuries are quietly starting to manifest themselves as holes for the stretch run. Over the last week some reports have surfaced about a few of our key players being dinged up, and now I’m starting to feel a little uncomfortable in my chair when I look at the NL East standing – should of used Preparation H, I suppose.

Red-Cross101

Shane Victorino is day-to-day with some swelling in his knee. I recall this being an issue around the All-Star break, but it seems that it is continuing to hamper the speedster. Maybe this is an explanation for Victorino’s slump at the plate? I don’t really care either way – rest him and give Francisco some ABs.

Chase Utley fouled a ball off his foot this past week, and missed a game because of it. I’m not overly concerned about this injury because we all know Chase will fight through a minor ding like this one.

Ryan Madson strained his oblique, apparently, but I haven’t been able to find out much about this. Madson was a horse for the Phillies’ last September and October, and without him I’d rate the back of our bullpen an F (it very well may already be there, however).

JA Happ missed his start Sunday with a strained oblique, and will now definitely miss his next start as well. Obviously, Happ has pitched like an ace this year, and starting Moyer over him will be a huge downgrade. Did the strength and conditioning coach take the weekend off?

JC Romero just had a cortisone shot in his pitching elbow, so that can’t be a good sign. I thought Romero was battling a forearm issue since July? I have serious doubts about Romero’s ability to come back this season and pitch effectively.

Clay Condrey has been out as long as Romero with an oblique injury, and has tried multiple times to come back. Condrey is still experiencing discomfort, and his rehab assignment has been delayed. My guess? Done for the year.

Wow – That is a lot of injuries at a bad time for the Phillies. Couple our injured players with our currently inept offense and cock-sucking closer and you have a formula for a deep playoff run if you ask me. I can’t wait for those queer October commercials either.

Blanton Completes the Sweep Behind Scorching Offense

What went down: The Phillies completed the sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks to move to 20 games over .500 (69-49). The offense was in cruise control last tonight, with Werth and Howard having big games, while the rest of the bats held their own. This series wasn’t even competitive from the Diamondbacks perspective, as they basically laid down for the Phillies.

Is that vintage Ken Griffey Jr.?

Is that vintage Ken Griffey Jr.?

Who and what pissed me off: Pedro Feliz. I wouldn’t really say that you pissed me off last tonight, but it is obvious you could use a breather. Dobbs has been a ghost for this club recently, and I’d like to see him get the start against Pelfrey in New York.

Eric Bruntlett. I didn’t watch your AB because I was out getting drunk at that point, but seeing your name in the box score bothers me. You should be embarrassed that half the pitchers on the team have a higher OPS than you. Jesus Christ.

Mitch Williams. Anybody watch the game on the MLB Network last night? I realize Mitch covered this team for a few years, but you would think everyone on the roster was an MVP candidate. Wild Thing was blowing every player so hard I was getting sick to my stomach. Yuck.

What I liked: Joe Blanton. Armed with your pitches and your farts, you hung in there tonight and turned in a very good outing. I’ll go as far as to say that you didn’t have your best stuff tonight, but you still got it done. It sure is nice that our starters have been turning in 6+ inning starts with ease lately.

Pull my finger

Pull my finger

Ryan Howard. You’re doing it again, man. Every year around August, things just seem to click for you.  All of a sudden you have the sweetest swing in baseball, and if a pitcher throws you a strike, they are going to pay. Fans will quickly forget your June/July woes when you put the team on your back like this. Bravo, dawg.

Jayson Werth. You hit your 28th home run last night, and just like Howard you are scorching hot right now. I like your style, and you’re quickly becoming one of my favorite players. Not only are you mashing the cover off the ball, but it is obvious you deserved your All Star appearance this year.

Ben Francisco. This is the diamond in the rough part of the Cliff Lee trade. Not only is Francisco under control for a few more years, but he is a solid 4th outfielder who has so far proven he can come off the bench and give the Phillies’ quality ABs.

Can somebody please explain to me: Why our bullpen hasn’t pitched in a month? Oh, right, our starters have been fucking nasty.  That’s it, I forgot.  Condrey and Romero have been on the DL for a decent amount of time now (much more than 15 days), and we haven’t really missed them. I might actually have trouble telling you who our options are out there right now, because most of them haven’t seen any time in the last two weeks.

Now what: The Phillies will head to Bailout Field this weekend to take on the Mets for a four-game series. Golden boy Cole Hamels (currently our 4th best starter) will take on some loser tonight for the first game.  If Cole Hamels can give us a quality start tonight, I’ll be happy.  I’m tired of bitching about how Cole has to regain his 2008 form, and go out there and dominate.  Stop bitching about getting squeezed and bloop hits — pitch the fucking ball like you know how to.

The Countdown is Over: JC is Free!

J.C. Romero’s suspension has ended.  He is eligible to put on a Phillies uniform and dance around on the mound as soon as tonight.  This is delightful news.

Eric Bruntlett:  We appreciate your concern.  Wearing this shirt was the coolest thing you’ve done all year.

Judgment Day: Jesus Christ Return

jc-romero

All praise JC! Lord of the freshest shape-up.

Barring a rainout over the next two days, or actual judgement day, JC Romero will return from his 50 game suspension on Wednesday – thank you Jesus. Romero will provide instant stability to the backend of the Phils’ bullpen, with Eyre moving into a more comfortable role, and TRASHner hopefully moving to the minor leagues. I’m pumped for Romero’s signature antics of walking the bases loaded to then strike out the side (which is followed by ludicrous chest thrashing/celebration). Admit it everyone, if this guy was on the Mets you would crucify him. ZING!
